Merced National Wildlife Refuge
This is the southeast viewing platform at the Merced National Wildlife Refuge, where around 60,000 geese and 15,000 sandhill cranes spend their winters lounging in relative amity. Many, many geese were visible at this spot half an hour earlier, but they'd lifted off and left for their overnight roosts by this point in the evening. There's nothing quite like the sound that 60,000 geese make when they're circling overhead and saying goodnight to all their friends.
