Narrow-Petaled Trillium (Trillium angustipetalum) Petals

Lying atop the leaves are the sepals, mottled purple and green as if they can't decide whether they're leaf or petal. Sepals are, in fact, specialized leaves that encase and protect the flower during the budding stage, so they're a bit of each.
