False Solomon's Seal (Maianthemum racemosa) flowers and leaves

False Solomon's Seal (Maianthemum racemosa)

The technical term for the arrangement of the leaves along the stem is "alternating," one of the more intuitive bits of jargon in the botanical lexicon. Shifting to the stuff-you-need-to-look-up category, they're also considered either sessile (i.e., being attached directly to the stem rather than being attached via little stems of their own, known as petioles) or clasping (meaning that the base of the leaf encircles the stem).
