The Happy Isles Rockfall Exhibit

Read the informational placards here and you will learn, among other arresting things, that had you been standing on this spot one particular evening in 1996, you would not have subsequently stood in any other spot ever again. Rockfalls are a regular occurrence in Yosemite, with several dozen per year typically recorded, and though fatalities are relatively few - fifteen in the past 150 years - they're not unheard of; this one generated an airblast that felled close to a thousand trees, including one that killed a 20-year-old man near the Happy Isles snack center. The NPS's Yosemite rockfall page has more information about rockfalls in the park, and park scientists have created an interactive rockfall map where you can read summaries of hundreds of rockfalls that have occurred over the course of Yosemite's existence as a national park.
