This is one of the easiest satellite views to decipher: start at the green hikers, cross the dam (commemorated here by a pink pushpin) and proceed along the green line until it ends.
The great black blob dominating the picture is not fresh tar over a pothole, but the placid waters of Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Though it's hard to tell from a satellite's vantage point, the land slopes steeply up from the shores of the reservoir - remember, this is a canyon that was frequently compared to Yosemite Valley before it became a municipal waterworks.
