Vernal and Nevada Falls (see the Mist Trail) look wholly untroubled by the Great Depression, which was nearly a year along by the time this photo was taken, and in fact the model doesn't seem badly affected, either. It could be that Americans hadn't yet realized what they were in for: though unemployment had tripled from its Black Friday levels, it was still only 6.6% in August of 1930; two years later, it would top 25%.[1]

This photo appears to have been taken from somewhere between the Geology Hut and the Glacier Point trailhead, possibly in the vicinity of where the amphitheater is today. The Glacier Point Hotel should be looming nearby.
