If you're prepared to make a few sacrifices, you can get some of the Yosemite area's cheapest motel rooms at the Muir Lodge. What sort of sacrifices? The cheapest rooms have double beds instead of queens or kings; there are no phones in the rooms; the rooms have televisions, but with only one channel - whatever channel management selects from the office will be the channel that the guests in all the rooms get to watch. There's a pool, but it's left unfilled year round, and there's lots of paint flaking off the outsides of the buildings. The owner was reluctant to show me any of the rooms, suggesting that I look at photos of them on the motel's website instead, and a sign in the office recommends that guests inspect their rooms before signing in. The motel does have free wireless Internet access, though the signal doesn't reach some of the rooms farthest from the office. Pets are not allowed.
If you're willing to overlook all this, though, you may find the rates to your liking. For $30 you can get a berth in a hostel-style room with a double bed and two bunk beds (all rooms, including the hostel room, have private baths). A couple can get a room with a double bed for $50 during summer weekdays and $60 on weekends, though only two of the rooms have this configuration (a single double bed) & rate. Rooms with queen beds start at $60 for two guests. At the top end, a suite with a queen bed and a sofa bed goes for $130 for 4 guests. For a complete rate list, see the motel's website.
