Blue Dicks Flower Blooming on the Hite Cove Trail

Blue Dicks (Dichelostemma capitatum)

Family:  Lily (Liliaceae)

You don't need to keep your eyes glued to the ground (which sounds unpleasant, anyway) to spot Blue Dicks. Its Plastic-Man stem will outgrow grass, flowers, or just about anything else that stands between it and the sun. Let your shadow fall upon it at your own risk.

Blue Dicks is primarily a foothill flower - you can find it in abundance on the Hite Cove Trail - but it also reaches the lower elevations in Yosemite.

Blooms:  March - May

Lifespan:  Perennial

Origins:  Native (see distribution maps for California and US/Canada)

This Photo: Along the Hite Cove Trail, late March
