Yosemite Hikes masthead (Pothole Dome)

June Lake, California

Location: 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Yosemite's eastern entrance at Tioga Pass; 82 miles (130 km) from Yosemite Valley (map)

Population 613; elevation 7,650 feet (2,330 meters)

June Lake occupies one of the prettiest locations of all the small towns surrounding Yosemite, with June Lake (the lake) a block off the main street, three more lakes nearby along the June Lake scenic loop, and the High Sierra looming to the west. Though it's a long drive to Yosemite Valley and the Glacier Point Road, June Lake makes a good base for exploring the eastern slope of the Sierra and the scenery along Yosemite's Tioga Road - or at least the road's eastern half, where most of its highlights are concentrated.

Directions from Yosemite:  Take the Tioga Pass Road 12 miles (19 km) east from the Yosemite entrance to Highway 395; take 395 south for 10.5 miles (17 km) miles to Highway 158; turn right on 158 and drive 2 miles (3.5 km) west to June Lake. If you prefer the scenic route, take the Tioga Road to 395 as specified, but then take 395 south for only 4.3 miles (7 km) to the north end of the Highway 158 scenic loop, which routes you past a trio of picturesque lakes before you arrive at the west end of June Lake.

Gas & Groceries:  There's a gas station two miles east of town at the 158/395 junction. The June Lake Market in downtown June Lake carries a small selection of groceries.

ATM Machines:  At the June Lake Market and two miles east of town (at the 395/158 junction) at the June Lake Junction gas station.

* Asterisked hotels don't list rates on their websites, so rate ranges were obtained by haranguing hotel employees or checking a variety of dates in their reservation systems. Since they generally don't bother to inform yosemitehikes.com when they change their rates and calling them or checking their reservation sites every day would be intolerably boring, there's a chance that they've changed, so you'd need to check with the hotel to make sure that these rates are still accurate. Also, listed rates generally do not include taxes.
